A few Words on the WTF kits. I picked up the cones from Walms a couple of months ago but due to time restraints it took a while to finish the pipes. Whatever you do keep the cones oiled after you have handled them as if you leave them for a month in the humid (Not so humid now) Ontario air they will oxidize and then it takes some serious work to get their luster back..... My mistake. Oxidization forms where you had your sweaty hands..... leaves interesting prints though. The cones fit up really, really, really well with very little (Almost none) filler material to start a puddle and run a nice bead. Clean the metal very well or you will get some sparkles and pops from the slag as a result of the laser cutting. Again i leaned the hard way here and once it starts you will need filler material to passivate the area. Or grind it out. I should know better.
Using a mandrel (Copper tube over bar stock) helps a shit load with head dissipation. I started with a scratch start Tig which leaves little cats whiskers when i pulled away.... That's what she said. About 2 thirds of the way through i started using a nice inverter Tig with a foot pedal and holy shit i will never go back. Argon purge although not mandatory helps a LOT.
Walms has designed the cones so there are datum marks to align them with ease. These little marks are a godsend and lined up every time.
If you commit i reckon you could get these welded up and mounted in 2 days but that all depends on how many beers and cigs you have along the way. I had a lot.
Walms, I can't thank you enough for such a well designed product that really does make it easy for the average bloke to weld em up. The feeling of accomplishment is awesome once done and I'm over the moon with the results.
Anyone thinking of undertaking this project should not hesitate.
A note on the suspension bits: All up it cost 325 bucks for the Ohlins rear and Duc 748 front end. It took a lot of time on Kijiji but in the end it payed off. (Ohlins came of flea bay UK and are from Yam XJR, there are a crap load of these bikes in Europe which drives price down but i will say they took some serious elbow grease to get em looking good.)
It's Mop & Glo time!
Cheers Jules

Nice words Jules, thanks! Awesome welding tips as well. The slag from the laser is something I never even thought about. I'm curious how much you enjoyed welding the pipes?

To be honest i think I'm a closet welder, all be it amateur. Always been fascinated by the art of joining metal with lightening in your hand. For me welding is like some twisted form of meditation. You have to slow your heart rate and relax. Anyone that has tig welded knows if you get frustrated or rush your welds turn to shit. often a beer or two helps too.....but after 6 beers the welds go bad again So did i enjoy it.... hey yeah i did! Cheers Jules

Good to hear! I'm always looking for welders who don't mind welding these things... 22 gauge is not for everyone! If you are at all interested in doing it for someone else's project, I can send them your way? If not, you can tell me to bugger off like others have!

I will have to think on that for a bit as the time involved is significant on top of current workload. However if anyone wants advice from a novices perspective i would be glad to help in any way i can. 1st tip is use a #9 tig torch not a bulky 17. 2nd tip use gas lens setup. 3rd buy a good welding helmet or you will curse not being able to see the tiny low amperage puddle. 4th more gas is not better with low amperage as it makes you arc wander. 5th use a 1/16 tungsten or smaller. use appropriate filler material and preferably smaller than 1/16, .045 is pretty good.
Thats enough from a hack as i'm sure there are welders on here with far greater skills than I.
Ta Jules

ok time for an update and a little pipe porn. I didn't like the1/16th wire as below as it flexed too much. so it was time for another plan. came out alright. This was prior to running so the HT leads are there for effect. It's time to start the bike and listen to sweet WTF music.....ish. I had the CDI shit the bed (not work at all- shorted out) so had to build another one. THANKS Jim Manning! please bear in mind at this stage i'm testing electronic components so the seat is a little shocking.... i mean .....sparky. (quick note: the reg / rectifier was giving me 16.9Vdc which is too high and kind of shit so i installed a regular 3 phase regulator and only took 2 phases. Yup the load on the reg rectifier goes up a little but given newer components etc i think it will be fine. New reg is for an XV750 i think...now produces a perfect 14.6-VDC) I hope this video works as this made my day...week...month. holy crap it makes me smile from ear to ear. Oh and please excuse the whacky colonial accent in the vid.... I suppose we are all POM's here. (FYI, If POM is a foreign term for you....... www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pomCheers Jules

Just a quick update and 1 loaded question. Finished some of the wiring mock-up. Finished the seat.....bit slippery but for a quick test ride all in all not too bad. Some rearset action. THE INFO FIRST: -Kawasaki H1E -Stock Carbs -Have not chosen air filters yet but have a set of pods.....not Uni filters at this stage so may be issues? -WTF pipes / The not so bonkers version tucked up nice and tight. Oh and no mufflers....yet. (It sounds too good right now) In Ontario for elevation reference. AND THE LOADED QUESTION: I have read the other posts but what would be the recommended jetting for this setup. is it 30 idle / 102.5 mains and needle position 4? This is the closest i could find for an answer but wanted to check in with the Gurus before ordering brass. Thanks Jules

Excellent use of a KBC catalog! Givr, Mouth and mraxl are 3 guys that I can think of off the top of my head that have the same pipes on a stock 500 with stock carbs and pods. Maybe PM them or wait until they chime in, but they should be able to get you in the right ball park for brass.
