A RD frame is actually pretty light, I think a detabbed one was like 28 lbs. And I just weighed my KH 400 modded frame, it's at 22.4 lbs, but I have to add the seat section tubing. The S series frame/750 combo just doesn't work well if you like great handling. The extra weight of the engine, plus the extra weight of the spinning crank, negates the great handling of the S bikes. And it would be better to use a lower tune 500, that a tuned up 400. Thought small blocks are fun. I believe the 400 in the article was put back to stock porting after a meltdown, but don't quote me. Almost doubling the HP really stresses a motor.

Ok Moo you hit the nail on the head. I have a Yamaha yds7 frame that I will be using for this project and like you, I believe a lower powered 500 rather than a 400 waiting to explode will be the best combo. The ds7/r5 frame is almost identical to the TD/TR with thicker wall tubing and the lightest of the Yamaha street frames.

The ds7 frame with swingarm ,rear brake pedal assembly, rear footpegs, coils and all the tabs still intacked comes in at a weight of 44 lbs. I have a bare ds7 frame detabed & no swingarm I pulled out out of the rafters. It has a weight of 21 lbs.

LC got huge weight savings w aluminum excel rims and and a s2 rear brake drum. When rocket mike rode it he said the front end felt like nothing. Throw a fzr rear swingarm on there and minimal body work/ chopped h1 frame, fibreglass tank and wtf chambers you'd be in the ballpark.

I talk to lc about his bike because my goal is 300...he told me "it can be done, and I didn't cheat like you" lol

He also changed up his front brakes but I don't remember the details, and had low profile light tires installed.

hey Paul, you collect frames or what? The yds7 frame is just like the early tz frame you have there. What better place to start, than with a Yamaha race inspired frame. Oh,that reminds me,I just happen to have a early TZ front end with a flanged aluminum rim to put on the front of this project.

Dang it, now you got me thinking about getting back to my build. I really wanted to build a (obviously) reeded 250 with 60 RWHP just to be different. But maybe a 350 would be more in order, a bit less hard tuning. The 400 looks too much like a Yammi motor, and we can't have that!

I have some ds7/R5/RD350 parts if you need anything. Sounds like a cool project.

hey Paul, you collect frames or what? Well at least I don't have frames in my Rafters!!... That's where I keep my wheels Should be an interesting project Brad! Have you placed the 500 in the DS7 frame? Would be sweet to obtain or weld up a thin wall 4130 swing arm. Get what ever hubs your using turned down & lightened also the fork outers keeping that unsprung weight to a minimum !
