With winter coming on,thoughts change to new projects. We have had some pretty cool projects here over the years most with updated wheels front & rear ends & brakes. Not much attention to weight. I, liking race bikes lean towards low weight high HP good handling bikes.Cafe racer or custom,if you will. With this in mind I have set a goal of 4.6 lbs per HP.built around a 500 triple engine. That puts the weight around 300-325 depending on how modified the engine is.I don't want to spend a fortune so I will be looking for the lightest parts from any bike, fiberglass or whatever, but still want to keep it "period correct" if you know what I mean. Anyone up to the challenge? Put your thinking caps on & see what you can come up with.I'm going to.

Definitely go with a S series frame if you aren't going with a custom one. If you are going custom frame, I will give you the guy that can do it.
My bike weighed in at 376 with 4 gallons of gas, (24.8 lbs.) steel wheels, stock battery and box. I do have all fiberglass body parts.

I don't have the talent or budget for that kind of build so I will be scrounging the salvage yard for a suitable frame.

Why not go with a slightly more modern frame... Aluminum?

It would be interesting to see how light one could build a h1/750. I know it's unlikely to approach the weight of a modified S-series frame, but we have a pretty hot h2 engine on the bench and a period fibreglass tank in our possession. I've started projects with less before...

Why not go with a slightly more modern frame... Aluminum? I think Brad's idea is to keep it as 'vintage' as possible.

Ya Drewski, now your talkin!Remember the goal is 4.6 lbs per HP.Which is not out of hand.I choose the 500 engine for availability. But you get the idea. With a high HP h2 engine, you can afford to take on more weight with the same result.
You are right about me keeping it vintage.

I don't have any h1 stuff, but I do have a few h2 bits kickin' around.

I like goals, should be fun to watch...why 4.6? Is there a reason for that number?

Not really,I just thought a 300 lb H1 with about 65 HP would be about right. That comes to 4.61 lbs per HP. I wanted to set a goal that was attainable. I don't think it's possible to get a H1 framed bike down to 300lbs so I will use a different frame.

Ya, I think with an early frame you might get it to around 340lbs but I have two late model frames & they are heavy as hell. I am shooting for 300lbs so I will not be using a Kawasaki frame.

My 'Mongrel' weighs in at 390 lbs without a purposeful attempt at weight reduction. I wonder how much could be shaved off that number? Probably get 'er down another 30 lbs, but it would be costly! At 390 lbs, I'd need 85 hp. Thots?

Cool thread! Maybe an S frame With a modified H2 engine?
Let's say 100 crank hp which you easily get just by adding lift plateas, pipes and 38 carbs, or 120 as you get by a litte more modifications and moderm WTF pipes, Jollymoto or Jim Lomas race pipes?
Then you are WAY above Your goal. Maybe Down to 3 lbs/hp
