Wondering if anyone can help me with a question.
The little metal band that holds in the battery, and the plate the ignition boxes mount to. Were these originally just zinc plated, or were they painted? Having a tough time deciding as theres some black paint on both buy its minimal, could be overspray from some PO.
Trying to get everything together that I need to get zinc plated so I can send that stuff out. Just got the blasting cabinet together so should be able to make quick work of cleaning stuff up.
In other H1 related news, got the frame back a while ago, looks great. Tins should be out of paint this week or next. My cylinders have been bored but the crankcases, cylinders and head are still at the shop being vapour blasted. Got my crank back from Charlie a few weeks ago, that thing is clean enough to eat off. My current job like I said is cleaning up parts for zinc plating and chrome. Need to get my rear rim done, few big gouges out of the chrome. Then I can actually start working on this thing. Hopefully I can get all the black painted stuff done while the rest is out for plating.

I usually look at the triples resource site and items for sale on ebay to see what kind of finishes certain parts have. Personally I just have H2's and they have the battery door zinc plated. The base for the CDI units is that goldish colored plating. Hope this helps you out. The bike should be a nice one once you are done. browney out

I think the battery door is for sure zinc plated after looking at it. I'm still of two minds on the ignition one. I think it might have been black in a previous life.
Normally I'm nowhere near this anal about stuff, but I told myself this was a restoration, so I want to get it right if possible.
Really looking forward to this bike, never even ridden a triple before, and now I'll basically have a brand new H1 to ride in the spring.

3cyl.com/mraxl/partid/batterybox/batterybox.htmAlways make sure to make good use of the resource pages Dale has provided us with. INVALUABLE to say the least. Looks more like pot metal but that may indeed be a zinc finish. I usually paint them black to match the frame, but I am no "correct resto" guy.

I found the pic for the early H1 version using Dale's database. Thanks for the reminder. If the early one was black I'm willing to bet the late one was too.

FINALLY got my chrome and zinc plated stuff boxed up. Hopefully when I'm off this stuff will be back and I can finally start assembling some stuff. Also have to strip my forks and start the refinishing process. Unfortunately once I got them apart it looks like my fork tubes are a bit pitted where the clamp mounts. So yet another cost. But I've got that much sunk in already it'd be silly not to put new fork tubes on. Thats not something I want to be taking off again soon.

Guess I didn't realize you were doing a primo resto on her Tyler. New repro fork tubes are not too bad at around 100 a set. Its just me, BUT.... 50% of the parts in this photo,
I would polish the shit outta and not re-chrome them at all. A mint resto with original patina aged parts (in good shape as these seem to be) is a far better look.

They really look a lot better in the pics than in real life. This bike had been sitting in an unheated damp shed for a long time. A lot of those parts to be zinc plated had a LOT of rust on them, anything that was bad was sandblasted by the time I took that pic.
The main issue is, any parts with pitting are just going to get worse. This is going to be stored in a heated garage, but so is my 650 and any bare parts on that are already showing corrosion after just a few years. Corrosion still happens when you have as much salt water in the air as we do. Every morning the brakes on my car look like she's been sitting for a month.
Also, I've never had a new bike before. I didn't buy the new Ducati Scrambler I wanted so that I could build this bike. So I want it to be basically new.

Used to joke about how all the rigs around the wharf were rusty as hell.... lol

Its a good thing dad bought one of those new aluminium F-150s. Its parked about ten feet from the water at all times! At least with steel you get rusty steel, with aluminum you get fluffy white powder, unless the new fords are protected with one of those dielectric gizmos, if thats what its called??

I'm not sure if they do. I would have to assume they do with all that aluminium and steel mixed together.

Whats the period correct way to refinish the side covers? Full polish or just clean them up?
