Started another project a few weeks ago. All this talk by Rocket about a Track Bike got me thinking myself. It's fun to ride a streetbike on the track, but what if (horror of horrors!) I dropped the "Mongrel" on the track!! All that time and dollars... scuffed, scratched and crunched. So, what if I could find a cheap 2 wheeler just to ride on the track? Asked a few questions and found a likely candidate. A stock '81 Kawasaki kz550. Not too small and not too fast... just right for having a little fun on a budget. It needed some tlc and a little work to make it "track worthy". Who better to get it ready for May 9th than our resident track demon, Rick! I picked it up and dropped it on Rick's doorstep and now the fun begins! It's all your fault Mike.

What's the plans from Racer Rick Nothin fancy Curtis. Just clean it up, get it running, strip off the "un-needed" street stuff and set it up for the track. Of course, I have a hard time leaving well enough alone. I'll be adding some bits along the way. I HAFTA keep the cost down though.

This is what it looked like when I dropped it off at Rick's: I'll catch you all up later.

That tail section... Those look so badass with shortened seat and frame to convert solo

I'm sure Rick still has some green around somewhere.

Got a few bits to add to the 550. Here are a couple: Rick got the old h2 front end on. Pretty simple mod actually. I'll keep you up to date. Oh ya, "old school" spokes and aluminum wheels. They were lying around and I figured, "Why not?!"

Hey Drew what are you doing with the kz550 rims that came off the bike? I might be able to put them to good use

My buddy Mark spent a little time on the GPz engine to get it running before breaking the bike down. Cleaned the carbs (they were nas-ty!) plopped in a spare battery and she fired up right away. Gotta like that! So I think we'll put that on the shelf for now and concentrate on the kz engine.

Well, all my brilliant ideas are now costing me. My desire to use the wire spoked aluminum rims on the h2 hub are meaning new bearings (not so bad) and a MUCH smaller sprocket (very BAD). The sprocket on the h2 is 10 teeth larger than the kz550 runs. "Custom sprocket, here we go!" There goes the budget... Guess I'll be selling more parts to make up the difference. Up-Date: Rick may have found a supplier for the sprocket! We may be back on track, pun intended.
