Some replacement cdi units showed up in the mail today from Kawonda Dave (thanks man!) and most of them checked out ok with the resource site test procedure. Replaced 2 bad units and went to check for spark. damn, still only firing on the right cyl. Started moving wires around and by deduction figured the problem was coming from the stator. Found out that the pickup screws had come loose on the centre pickup and the left pickup had a bigger airgap than spec. It looks like I should get a better signal generator as the one I have has a chunk missing on the inboard tang. Pickups aren't damaged so either I missed this feature way back when or didn't think anything of it. Reset all gaps to 24 thou and now have a nice fat blue spark on all 3 cyls. I'm now wondering if the large airgaps killed the 2 cdi units. Seems like too much of a coincidence. Something for y'all with h2s and h1ds to ponder. You're welcome. Mr Jim could probably answer that...seems plausible

Too big a gap won't hurt the CDI units.

What would potentially? Environmental thermal cycling? Bad grounds? I know these components are now 40+ years old, so maybe its just age. Seems odd to me that they worked fine when I parked the bike and then a few months later, they're bad.

Just age. Probably capacitors.
