As I recall there is a notch in the alternator rotor that should line up with a pointer. (A small window to look through). Bend or move the pointer so it aligns with the notch at 25 degrees btdc, then strobe. Move pickup mount plate if needed to adjust timing until the latter aligns

Ps Watch out for poor/cracked solder joints at the pickups.
Be sure all 5 brushes and the slip ring are in good condition.
Sometimes a reduced spark plug gap is needed if spark power is limited and Rev limiting occurs.

Checked timing with a strobe light and found it to be off by quite a bit. Adjusted and took it out and it pulls nicely. I just read the part where they say static timing on this style is not accurate in the least bit.
While I had the timing light I started to double check AS adjustment, I find that with my UFO modified slides fully seated off of idle screw the idle is way too high....I wonder if the 3.5 CA is causing some issue. I might throw the standard slides back in and return it to that jetting spec.
Has anyone else with modified vm34 sled carbs had problems getting the bike to idle low enough? Idle was at like 1800rpm sheesh

Could possibly be an air leak.

You might find your cable is two short.I used an H1 lower(three) but used an H2 upper which is a little longer.Make sure it lets the slides bottom out before you ajust.Or you can just cut back the sheath of the upper H1 cable to give you more slack.

Sometimes the ufo holds the slides open. See if the plastic ufo contacts in a few spots of the carb casting when the slides are fully seated. I believe Phil (BBP) at ktog (ufo vm34 article in the hotrod section) had this issue.

I pull the slides and check.
Im running a different throttle housing because the throttle cable was also too short. But that's not the issue here.
Air leak is possible.

Well, main jet was way off.
I now have access to a sniffer at work on our dyno. My bike with early model cap and rotor was able to pull a 280 main! I'm now at a 220 and it's close. The 12.5 pilot was spot on and the needle is very close as well. Jim's ignition is much more efficient I take it, and now I can get that good gas mileage non triple owners are raving about.
I know a sniffer is cheating. But I'm fine with that. Hopefully more progress soon. Work is slammed and it's hard to stay motivated after working on bikes all day.

Well bike runs better than it ever has and I enjoyed a nice rip to work and around town the past couple days. My jetting is as good as it gets. I'll have to post my specs to the jetting thread for anyone at 2500'.
Seat is also done. I'll get more pictures soon.
Anybody got airtech front fender recommendations?
