the alternator or ignition cover on my 72 S2 is stuck. I removed the screws pulled out my rubber mallet and nothing. I know my screwdriver is going to destroy it. What do I do?

Hit it harder from the side. It has no locating dowels.

i did and eventually i got it off. the cover is toast and it's full of rust all the points capacitors everything is rusted and needs to be replaced. Very discouraged right now.

Finding A points cam is a real job... Good luck. Everything else should be easy to come by.

Somewhere not long ago I saw photos of a badly rusted points cam that had been restored to usable condition. I think it was just sanded carefully and thoroughly.

I think I'll have to give that a try first. Seems like condensers and points are easy enough to find on fleabay. Any tips on removing all the srews? They aren't budging but they aren't stripped so I'd like to try and save them.

Right, thanks, I remember now. Personally I'd buy new stainless steel screws rather than try to save rusty plain steel ones.

That was TTNut He put it on the lathe and used sand paper I think I remember it being pitted badly and he built it up, (spray welded maybe) and then turned it down and finished it off sanding it. Could have been someone else, but Im pretty sure it was Don.

I don't mind replacing the screws with new ones i just don"t want to cause anymore problems trying to get them out. I have points and condensers coming so for now I'll just trying breaking it down and cleaning to see how deep the rust goes. I saw the hole unit on peebay for $900 ish. That's way too spendy for me.

It would be for me too! You should be able to oil the screws, and if they don't come right out, run them in and back out a few times and they should come out OK.

Any tips on removing all the srews? They aren't budging but they aren't stripped so I'd like to try and save them. Do you have a handheld impact screwdriver with a bit that fits the screw heads? That will usually break almost any screw free (loose).

Right now I know i need the the cover. i have contact points and condensers in the mail and I've located a gasket so I'm going try that first but the cover is a mandatory in the needs department. it's a 72 s2.
