Guys, I've had the old H2 out for a few short shakedown runs. Now for the most part it hauls pretty good, but it only seems to perform well under load. If you back off the throttle and "coast" it's all burble and not very smooth. Idle is near perfect sitting at 1,100 RPM. Does it sound a bit lean to anyone. I never get a good read off the plugs because they're never dry, always wet. Thoughts?

Are the plugs black and wet? Then it's rich..not lean.. Is the engine stock? how big are the main jets? Pilot jets? Are you running air filters? don't see any in the pics...

Yeh, black and wet...but not much smoke?? Here's the setup: mild port, 38mm Lectrons (so no traditional main jet), foam UNI's, B8HS, 91 octane and 40:1 pre-mix (Lucas synthetic). Starts and idles fantastic. A bit boggy off the line, and it kind of "four strokes" a bit at cruise???

Switched to B9HS...ran 50 miles. Plugs still black. Not much exhaust smoke and easy to start. LC, there's no needle to drop...just a metering rod which can be raised for lean and lowered for rich. I raised it, and the bike is more "boggy" down low...help!

doesn't raising the needle richen it up and lowering it lean it out?

Yes, you're right...raise for richer...kinda like a paycheck (that's how I'll remember). Anyhow, let's say I have black plugs, burbly cruise, boggy at low RPM. Sounds like I should lower the rod, right?

Check to see all three choke plungers are seated.

Never thought of that, but it feels exactly like the choke is on a touch. All the plugs look similar, but I guess if one cylinder is rich, the rest will bog too??

Should do a 'plug chop'. Take it out for a blast, run it hard to X mph...then shut it off..coast to a stop and check the plugs then. What metering roads are you using? I also know that with my GSXR street bike, the pod filters are choking it more than when the motor was in my drag bike. We used stacks at the track, and now it has filters. A bit black in the pipe now, and a bit of a burble mid range till it clears out. 38 Mikunis. Any adjustments on the Lectrons should be made 1/4 turn at a time. Gary

Ian, I think you need to let someone with an H2 to take it for a ride... You should have plenty to chose from at the Gap! I took it for a ride and it seemed to have the same pull as my 400 until it hit 6000 rpm then there was a whole lot of difference after that! Do you know if it has been ported? I don't know much about the H2 but I thought the magic number for the power band was less than 6K. My bike burbles a bit when cruising but I'm usually WFO so it's not noticeable very often... ;D Maybe the nature of the beast...

Hi Ian
Did you get your problem fixed with your plugs and mileage at the gap?

Actually no. The bike ran well at the Gap...no off-load cruising, just WFO and brakes. Plugs were still quite black. I'm going to get real aggressive with the air/fuel, and lean it out a ton. I've been pussy footing too much. I ran out of gas after only 64 miles (4+ US gallons). The gas Jeff Goldblatt brought me was mixed about 20:1 so I fouled all my plugs for the next 2 tanks. But in general I think I'm not getting enough air, and I've been afraid to lean it out. Now I'm going to drop that metering rod a bunch. I'll keep you posted.

Just got back in from a short blast on the H2. I lowered the rods 1/2 turn (still chicken). Most of the four stroking is gone! Plugs show a little colour (something other than black) woohoo. So I think I'll go another 1/2 turn. Noticed the right cylinder has a little less "pop" at the exhaust. Is this a reasonable indication of poor compression? ian
