Hello all. I’ve got a 1976 KH400 that hadn’t been started in a while. After collecting and assembling pieces it was time to start it. The bike fired pretty quickly but after running for a short while I heard a squealing coming from the engine area. All pipes were smoking heavily. Each head pipe was hot but I shut it off before it warmed properly. (Heads and cyl. warm to the touch.) It’ll start right back up but eventually the squealing noise returns. Tried 3 separate times.
Trying to determine what to check or maybe I should run it till it’s idling without choke?
What would collective wisdom suggest?

Did you rebuild the crank?

No.

What did you work on since it was parked? I assume you had it running prior to that? Squeals could be part of clutch hitting cover but helpful to know if that's what you were working on.

Replaced gas tank, fuel lines, petcock, oil injection tank, brakes etc.... nothing engine related. I’ve never had this bike running prior to today. I bought it with the assurance it was in running condition when parked. I’m wondering if the noise varied with rpm. Thinking it just got louder but remained same pitch. Again it was running for very short periods. I’ll pay closer attention tomorrow.... and I’ll pull the clutch in to see if that makes a difference.

It's tough to diagnose over the Internet but my best guess is a bearing or bushing either for the crank, clutch or tranny. Maybe you could raise the rear wheel and spin it in gear (with the spark plugs out) to hear if it's audible at that speed. My next step would be to remove the right cover and isolate the crank by removing either the drive gear or clutch basket. Unfortunately the crank bearings and Rod bearings are the most likely culprit for an engine that sits for awhile. Did the PO mention how long it sat?

Did you drain and replace the transmission oil?

I have heard a high pitch whine after a rebuild that increases when revved but disappears as a few miles get put on. A constant squeal like a clutch rubbing I think should also increase with RPM. same as a bearing Could it be a leaky head gasket? although they sometimes chirp.
I have heard a squeal from the Iggy side and for the life of I can't remember what is was I fixed on a buds H1.

I would still be Leary if the noise eventually stopped. If a crank bearing, it will only cause more carnage if not dealt with. I'm assuming the squealing is a bearing that is skidding the rolling element.

Or is the bearing spinning in the case

Never had the engine apart. Here’s my next move. Tell me what you think. I’m going to jam the oil injector pump wide open and start it. I’ll listen more closely to determine everything we’ve discussed so far. Headed to the bike now.

DID YOU MIX THE GAS FOR THE START UP OR JUST HOPE THE INJECTOR WORKED?
