Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I have owned a Triple.(Had a 75 H1 project that I sold.....Regretted it ever since!)
I just acquired a 77 Kh 400 and am happy to have a triple in the garage again.
Bike has a new top end , pod filters, stock exhaust and new carb kit in the carbs.
The carbs are set to OEM......pilot 22.5, main 85, float height at 27 mm and air screw 1.75 turns out.
Fresh set of plugs.....running NGK BR8HS per NGK site gapped at .26 thou.
Fresh gas premix 32-1 on auxiliary tank.
Bike only fires on left cylinder......the other two are stone cold however the right exhaust seems to puff some smoke.
It spits and sputters but won't run for more than a couple seconds.
All 3 plugs are getting fuel, all 3 cylinders have spark and there is lots of compression.
I have worked mostly with 4 stroke in line 4 bikes and not many 2 strokes let alone triples.
Not sure where to go next? Ignition plate/timing?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
Todd

Any advice appreciated. -Get rid of the resistor plugs... use B8HS or B9HS. -Plug gap should be .035"-.039". -Don't use premix if you have the oil system connected. -If you used a carb kit put the original needles, main jet, & pilot jet back in after cleaning... carb kit jets are a no, no! -Float height should be 25mm. -Thoroughly clean totally disassembled carbs by soaking in carb cleaner, run a wire thru all passages. -Be sure exhaust baffles are clean and pipe is not not clogged. -Be sure ign coil wiring is not crossed.

Great info ......thank you
I just noticed the earth wire is not attached to the engine. Will sort that out too!

This isn't the cause of your problem, but the plug gap for a KH400 should be .035" to .039" (0.9 to 1.0 mm).

Check to see of your pilot jets are clear, also on a s series its possible to get the slides in backwards, make sure the curve of the slide is facing the air box.. Good luck..

So I got the proper plugs B9HS.......gapped properly!
Attached the earth wire to the engine.
Set the float height to 25 mm.
Started kicking and it would not even sputter. I checked the timing plate and it looked like it was off a little. So off with the flywheel and I moved it about 1/8 " to line up the timing Mark.
Kick again and it runs but only on one cylinder. Now it will actually spool up but only the centre cylinder.
Have nice big blue spark on all 3 jugs.
Saw a post on here about the low speed coil and all my values are within spec.
So I moved the centre carb to right cylinder and now it runs on the right cylinder only.
It looks like a fuel issue so the carbs will be coming off for a good soak and cleaning.
Thanks for all your input.......Gotta say it was pretty cool to fill the garage full of smoke!!!!

Ok so while I was kicking the bike over and over I noticed a weird sound coming from the engine. Sounds like a loose nut falling in the case. I removed the right side cover hoping it was in there.....neg Removed clutch assy and all good there. Removed all 3 exhaust hoping it was something rattling around in there....neg Pulled all 3 plugs and it sounds like it is in the cases. Soooooo..... looks like I will have to pull the motor and split the cases. Little nervous as I have never done that before. Top ends and valves yes but for not cases , trannys, cranks etc... I have the Haynes manual and it lacks a lot of detail to say the least. Especially for the kh400.Not a whole bunch of info re torque specs etc Can someone recommend a better manual for this bike please. Thank you
Any advice on engine tear down appreciated. There are couple very detailed blogs that I have really enjoyed.

I was scared the 1st time I split cases. Get a copy of the Glenn's manual on the resource site. It's easy as pie.

It's listed as the triples maintenance manual, I believe.

Ya go at it with the knowledge that once done you'll nearly be an expert. Kawasaki triples, 'turning riders into mechanics for 40+ years' (Hmmm sounds like a good t-shirt idea)

Don't worry... if you're tackled top ends with valves, I bet you'll find nothing more complicated in this engine, even with the transmission included.
