Well Kids, this project is back on under a new name. The "Respectable Hammer" is my replacement for the Mongrel. The Mongrel is for sale and the proceeds from that sale will go a long way to completing the "Hammer". While it's sad that the Mongrel is going, I'm excited to be on this new project. It won't be a quick build, but that's o'k. This is gonna be a fun journey with more than a few twists and turns I'd guess. And away we go!

So... back from the dead... Most of the running gear originally on this Project ended up on the GPz/kz550, so on the hunt we go... Ah ha!! A 'parts bike' just happened to find it's way to the shop. As well, I still have a 'few' other bits kicking around from previous projects. Case in point, the kz1000 rear wheel, hub and brake from my original kz. Nice, eh?

Got a loose rolling chassis and the engine sitting in place. LOTS of little pieces to source in order to get this done, but it's a looooong winter ahead.

Did you do the bracing on the frame?

Did you do the bracing on the frame? Not me personally, but yes. Basically, if you're looking to brace an old Kawi, most 70's vintage Kawi's can follow this bracing pattern: My h2 is not braced and handles great, even on the track. This is probably 'overkill', but...

The headstock bracing improves rigidity significantly, the rest is only marginal but does help a bit.

The headstock bracing improves rigidity significantly, the rest is only marginal but does help a bit. Ya, I know this debate has raged on for decades. Again, my h2, maybe the worst of all Kawasaki frames to emerge from the 70's, handles just fine with suspension mods ONLY. They are SIGNIFICANT suspension mods mind you... but that's all we did. Even with the added stress of stickier modern tires, whatever frame flex is there, doesn't upset the handling perceptibly at 7 to 8 10ths riding. I don't claim to ride 9/10's, even on the track. More than anything, I thing the frame bracing is cool.

Actually I took the time to do some stress analysis on my 400 frame, the info is buried here somewhere. So not my opinion as much as fact. Whether or not the rider takes it to the point where it makes the bike squirrelly is another thing. I know my stock KH400 frame with the swingarm reinforced is rigid enough for my style of riding.
