Quite a difference in carbs Rick I think you might need a larger gas tank. ;D Brad

The fibre rotary valves don't hold up to racing speeds, so I'm hoping the later steel ones will be adaptable.. Rick How did you make out Rick? I take it that the steel disks are thinner, will you need to modify the cover? Just wondering because I'll be following your lead...

The cover needs to be milled down and the O ring groove re-machined. And then the o-ring between the stub and case may need to be addressed. But then again, the stub will be replaced anyway with a larger one, for the larger carb.

I'm still waiting for my manual to come in the mail... Not even sure if it will specify the gap tolerance. I assume minimal but any idea of the target clearance? I need to qualify these surfaces anyway... It seems the original owner of my bike wasn't so concerned with clean air entering the motor... It looks like a mit full of sand had been thrown through the rotary valve...

When I bought the steel valve, I got the gear, spacer and cover that it uses...bolts right on my engine

Well that's convenient! Ha! It seems that they changed the design along the way... This is not the first time I've heard of the gear as part of the disc, mine only has a pin to locate it... No misalignment is possible to screw up the timing. This makes me think that maybe this pin is susceptible to shearing and why they made the move to a spline ( gear) Am I on the right track when you say gear?

No, it's still located by a pin, they just made the disc and gear 2 parts. The timing looks to be the same on both discs when installed.

Can you post a pic? I don't have anything that looks like a gear on my motor... Are you referring to the hub of the rotors valve has an external gear that engages with the flat disc? On my motor the hub and disc are 1

Thx Rick, that's exactly what I envisioned... I'll want to convert mine to the same. Off hand do you know the thickness?
