I'm undecided on what to do with the paint at this point. The silver that's on it is doing poorly, especially on the tail - tank is not bad, other than a few small nicks and chips.
As I 've never painted with a spray gun before my first thought was to experiment with the fairing only, thinking flat black to match the side covers and leaving the tank and tail. My better half suggested leaving the fairing alone and doing the rest of the bodywork in flat black.
I've got lots of time to think about it as I get it all fitted together and cleaned up but suggestions are always welcome.
Cheers, Neil

Thanks, Bake. Always wanted a half fairing on one of my bikes, so this is gonna be it. I got it from a guy on the kawi2strokes forum. It came off an H2 so I figured it should be a straightforward install . But, things never quite work out the way you'd like...this is turning out to be a load of work. Regardless, I love the lines and the retro signal lights. It turns out the mounting hardware is pretty amateur-hour so I'm ditching it and making up new bracketry for it. Some PO must have used a full tube of silicon caulk on the thing. The 7" automotive headlight was caulked in place. All electrical connections were caulked. Signal lenses caulked on. Even the insides of the signals were almost full of caulk . Most guys probably would have just turfed these beat up, rusty old things but not me. Once de-caulked and cleaned up, including new wiring, I'm putting 'em back into service. Still kinda pitted and tired looking but the bikes pushing 40 yrs old so we'll call it 'patina'. This bike has been sitting for about 10 years so there's literally an accumulated thickness of grime on all the metal surfaces. Nothing some time and elbow grease can't handle. Front fender and fork ears: The front wheel (and rear, I expect) is highly oxidized. I went at it with an assortment of cleaners but couldn't even get through the dirt at its thickest. Started a bit of polishing on the outer rim but then realized what a nightmare that was going to be once I got to the inside, spoke area. I finally just used steel wool and it cleaned up nicely without any excessive shine. Most of today was spent continuing the de-caulking... ...and reassembly of the front end. Cheers guys, Neil

Curtis,
The stock headlight shell is a little large such that there's no vertical tilt possible for aiming so I've come up with another, slightly smaller, lighter, plastic-shelled assy. to use. No idea what it's from but it works.
So, a few slight mods required since I built the bracket around the stock light. I've got one of the side support brackets done - one to go. Should have it all together by the weekend.
Cheers, Neil

I'd just replaced the rubber handlebar grommets so the old ones seemed like good candidates to cut up for spacers for the smaller headlight shell I'm using. Finished off the frame brackets for the fairing then marked the location of all three brackets on the frame with masking tape before removing them. Did a bit of cleanup on the brackets before dropping them off for powder coating. Before and after: Just got some new mounting hardware from Parts N More today for the fairing so it's now ready to mount but I'll leave it off for now as I'm still messing around with the front end. Picked up an EX250 caliper and master cylinder off ebay, both in excellent shape. Tore both apart to inspect and mainly to clean completely of DOT4 fluid as I'll be putting on a new braided steel line and using DOT5. It's a RH caliper so fork tubes and rotor swapped sides. Just finished making the caliper bracket using Walms' schematic found on mraxl's site. I've had half my set of tires for a while now but waiting on the second and I'll install both at once. The project is coming along but it seems like progress is slow - especially since it's forecast to hit +24C this weekend while I'm holed up in the garage. More to come...
