Does anyone look at cylinder head temps when tuning their triples?
I bought on of those infrared thermometer gun thingies. My bike is a 72 S2.
I still have to set the timing properly. Its just set to the flywheel marks. I put some better fitting carb spigots on and those Japanese ebay carb kits into the carbs. But as yet have still to go thru the carb tuning process.
New NOS plugs and new caps and wires.
Stock airbox.
What I'm seeing is left and center cylinders at around 115c after a few klicks riding. right cylinder tends to be 75-80c. I went a quarter turn in on the idle jets for left and center. But that's it so far. Like I said I should really polish up the timing first. When I'm doing the timing I should probably have a look at the compression too.
Does anyone else keep up on their cylinder temps?

Do the timing with a light now. Then synch your carbs and either by feeling the exhaust or better, with a uni-sych or similar get your carbs all pulling the same. See mrxl's site for carb tuning procedure. or look under links in this forum.

@ Curtis, I have a set of those at home. But they are Asian style I guess. Very flat, not round. Where would you hook those puppies up to in S2 carbs? No vacume ports are there? kawonda750. Did the timing with a continuity meter (beep beep) and the marks stamped into the rotor. But when I get time I want to set them up with my dial gauge in relation to TDC. If memory serves correct two of the factory marks are very close one is off a bit.

PS I printed out Mxrl's carb stuff a while back. Just got to get to it. Gardening has taken over my life! Watering watering watering. My family has taken to calling me "water boy" My pumpkins are starting to remind me of that movie, little shop of horrors I think it was. That and old tractors. Keeping an eye on the temps is a great way to confirm that your carb sync is set correctly, also if any air leaks are causing a lean condition. I tend to use the finger method for syncing, then confirm and fine tune using the sync-o-meter. When using the sync tool, you can set both cable tensions and idle screws, where the finger method really only deals with the cable tension.

I also use the TTO temp guages for my H2. Great tool. And also remember only half degree more advance on 1 cylinder makes the guage read more temp. (nice to know as many cranks are off phase, mine was 2 degrees off)
So, 1 cylinder showing more temp than another can come from several issues. Lower comp also lower temperatures.
Buy them, their great, and live monitoring is a big advantage regarding tuning.

True enough, they don't react fast enough to guarantee anything but in the case of my motor, the max temp was reading 450f when it was seized and it didn't melt thru the piston "yet" That's about 75 deg. Higher than I've ever had the motor personally.... They do require a bit of common sense to go along with the feedback. 1 sensor quit on me so another one is on order to replace it.

They are good in tuning as they show you any differences between cylinders that may be present. Your idle will be spot on using them. Your ignition timing will be shown if not correct. Your carb sync will be shown if not correct. Low comp will be shown. Maybe it is my half bad English, but in my world, dialling in carbs and timing is tuning. I would love an EGT, but it is so much easier using the TTO's, and they do what I want them to do. When running WOT I have to look at the road anyway, so it really does not matter if thet TTO's are slow vs the EGT's.

I've read that EGT's aren't quick enough to rely on either... The ultimate system would have knock detection that retards the timing and or activates a power jet of some sort IMO.
