This is my S2. I work on it in my backyard. After some failed attempts last summer I managed to get it started which I might say was very satisfying. Now a whole new mountain has appeared. oil from the heads, white smoke from the mufflers gas coming out of one of the exhaust pipes.Haven't tested the compression but the back pressure on the pipes is virtually non existent. I was given a lot of really good tips from post in general but it sounds like this is where I want to start. "Projects" sounds right.

I've removed the carbs. I actually had removed and cleaned the carbs last summer and used a rebuild kit from Diablo. I think the kit was called sudco, it had a sticker with a bulldog on it I built it according to the specs on the triples resource but I'm pulling them out again because I feel like maybe I didn't do a good enough job.

I pulled off the one header pipe that fuel was coming out of. It was actually loose where the other pipes were tight. i suspect i'll have to replace the gasket, it's pretty warped.

is there a way to test the carbs individually when they are off the bike?

The carb kits are crap, except for the fuel vales and seat, and the bowl gasket. The rest of the parts are junk, put the old stuff back in.

As moo stated..If you want new Jet needles & needles jet then get Ivans Carb kit for the S3 which is the same as the S2/S2A. Always use Mikuni pilot & main jets

You shouldn't need that kit, chances are all your old needles and needle jets are fine provided they are clean. New pilots and jets from mikuni or again the old ones... Personally, I wouldn't buy the kit unless you can't sort a jetting problem with stock parts.

As walms mentioned and I said earlier, unless your carbs have a gazillion miles on them, dismantle and make sure everything is spotless clean, reassemble set up the carbs and go from there, you may or may not need the float needle set for ea carb, I needed them for mine, they have moving parts and get fine wear marks which most times allows gas to flow when it shouldn`t. Sounds like you`re going to have fun with this project, my s2a is a blast, now that I`ve got most of my carb issues sorted out.
Cheers

White smoke from the pipes is not really an issue at this point. You cannot really feel much pressure from those pipes unless your baffles are clogged. I would pull the baffles out and just give them a clean or just pull em out and leave them out for now. Make sure you have fresh fuel and the petcock is flowing fuel out of all 3 spigots, Put new plugs in. Check the torque the cylinder head. Fire it up and check the 3 exhaust pipes for equal warmth with your hand. If that's all good, take it for a quick rip and report your findings. Bikes with high handlebars tend to have clogged baffles

On all 3 S2a's I have worked on they ALL required lowering the needle by moving the clip to the 2 notch to clean it up. These seem to wear more than the others. Me..I would put NEW needle and jets in. Why put worn out parts back in? here's Ivans web site. My S2A is getting a set. www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/s3.htm
