Looking at a GT500 for my son. All original '77 w/ new rubber, only 7500mi. It would be his first bike.
I remember the GT550 triples but not the 500 twin so much.
Any suggestions or comments, good or bad, anyone has to share?? Thanks.
Cheers, N.

Gt 550 is nice maybe sporty compared to the GT 500. The GT 500 isn't a rocket BUT is fast . Robust and very dependable . good gas mileage . My 2 buds who had new 75 and a 77's got at least 50 mpg all the time . Never broke down. GT550's are smoother I think . never rode one or knew anyone that had one.

Thanks, guys. Dependable and not too wicked fast - sounds like a good mix for a first bike. We went and had a first look at it last night. New tires, sprockets and chain, airbox to carb rubbers, gas cap. Rebuilt carbs and creemed tank (already de-laminating). Left side mirror broken and removed. The only thing I see that doesn't look stock is the taillight/licence plate bracket assy and shortened rear signal light stems. Some pitting on the wheels and a bit of surface rust on the pipes (very solid, otherwise w/ baffles in place). He's gonna charge the battery and get some gas in it so we can fire it up tomorrow. He did mention that when it warms up the idle starts to climb. Carbs? timing? bad crank seal? The guy wants $1000 firm. Sound reasonable? or out to lunch? Cheers, N.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll see how it runs and take it from there.

The 500 twin seems to be more sought after than the 550.They were a strong dependable bike.Had lots of friends riding them back then.I believe they had a cent re seal,it was the Yamaha that had the lab seal.About 47 HP,14 second quarter, top at about 110mph.These were the ones to beat on the track 500class.They kept the H1r out of the record books.Very good, docile, heavy, indestructible bikes. The 72 was the best & fastest.
