The tank I am working on has no internal rust on the bottom half (however it had some very stale gas) but the top half has very light rust, but enough rust that I would not leave it. I have used stuff in a kit before but this is so light that I am wondering if some bottle of rust remover from a store( CT or automotive supply store) , left in the tank for some period of time would be enough to get the light rust out? As in seal off the filler hole and leave the stuff in the tank , the tank being turned upside down so the rust remover was sitting on the rusty area?

I found Evaporust to work great on the last 2 tanks I cleaned. Used the same batch on both tanks 6 months apart. Just strained the liquid through some fine mesh to get the lumps out is all.

III+1 I don't know how relevant this is, but I used CLR on an H-1 tank and it did a good job. However, I had the fuel petcock still on the tank and the CLR really attacked the white metal (or whatever that material is that the petcock is made out of) to the point of leaving pinholes in it. If I did it again I'd plug the top and bottom holes with something cheap like corks. Maybe Evaporust is not as aggressive.

Darth Evaporust works really well at removing light rust & does not damage the original finish. I removed the heavy rust from the inside of a wheel but it took a couple of weeks of soaking to get it all. It would be much quicker to use an aggressive acid such as phosphoric or muriatic. Just make sure you keep a close watch on progress.. SoupD.

Evaporust can/will leave a nasty black finish if left on/in too long. You'll want to check it every couple of hours. Happened to me right about the 24 hour mark.

what would the "concrete etcher" do to the inside of a tank?? It does a great job, but the "new" metal is very susceptible to re-rusting, so you need to clean it...this only takes an hour of rinse, shake and repeat..then you must coat immediately with 2 stroke oil. I put premix in the tank. After a while it's just business as usual.

I've used evaporust on lots of parts but haven't tried it on a gas tank yet. For heavier rust in tanks I swear by electrolysis - it's amazing how well it works. The process can be lengthy but very little effort involved other than cleaning the anode regularly.

Using Evaporust after you get the tough rust out will keep your tank from rusting again they say.
