The ESL 57's were the first electrostatic speakers produced by Quad in the UK. Electrostatics have the distinction of being the most natural sounding type of speaker available. Because there is no cone or diaphragm there is no coloration of the sound. Their Achilles heel is that they can be a little light on bass. The reason for stacking them (2 pairs) is so they can be bi-wired therefore using one unit per channel for bass only, the other unit handles the midrange & treble..Oh yes, because they work electro-statically there are very high voltages involved, up to 5000 VDC. You don't want to be touching them while playing if you have removed the cover.. www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/quad/esl-57/PRD_120487_1594crx.aspxSoupD.
