I started cleaning up the pipies on the A since NOS or reproductions are sky high priced. They are solid and were covered in 28 years worth of hardened crap. They cleaned up ok but there are stains , not actual rust but where something above has rusted and water run onto the pipes leaving a rust colored stain that will not polish off. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of them?

There is straight phosphoric acid..that works, but the best stuff I have seen is filter cleaner you get from hot tub/spa suppliers. Make a pouch around the area on the pipe -- out of trash bags and duct tape; fill it with the cleaner and let it soak.

Autosol metal polish (contains an extremely fine abrasive) works wonders too....

Dave, possible it's all also battery acid that has leaked onto the pipe?
I know my did D had some and I was just thinking out loud.

I ordered some autosol today from the local Home Hardware. We'll see what happens now Scott.

if the battery slobbered on your pipe you'll never make the stain go away, the chrome top coat has been etched off and your seeing the under layer of nickel, copper-nickel, or what ever the first coat is. Autosol works nice and for the amount of polishing the average guy is going to do, it's perfect. A buffing wheel will make it look the best it's going to, then a hand final buff and it'll be way beyond " good, it'll be good enuff"
