Rick Yates, if your out there, remember those nice ends you made for me for my chambers. The chambers are finished. I spring loaded the baffle tubes inplace and upsized the main jets to 120 in centre and 115's on outside 2. Did not touch pilot jet's yet. I have a ton of 2-stroke experience, but I have no pipe tuning experience. I've set the points and timing and went for a little test ride. Motor sounds good, no knocking or ping plugs burning good. Bike runs awsum except for slightly flat (gutless) spot at very low rpm which I think is "lack of fuel" issue at 1/8-1/4 throttle. It is really just a slight issue,I figured timing and mains were good so I let it howl thru all gears up to about 95mph down Green Lane. It made excellent power and sounds insane. Is this flat spot maybe in need of bigger pilot jets? My jet selection was based on "the biggest I had". It is just about there,I may move the needle clip 1 notch richer and see what happens. I am open to suggestions in the jet dept. No idea of brand of pipe/ maybe wirges.

When you are experiencing this flat spot, slowly thumb the choke lever to richen it up...If it's lean, I'd start with some needle adjustments before I changed any jets...

Thanks Rick, I forgot to mention that when I give her a tweek of choke, just for half second, it does clear it's throat and goes. Also forgot to mention that I slowly worked my way up to the 95mph run over a week or so. Making sure brakes, steering etc. were functioning and a bit of hiway driving first, then I pounded it hard once to see if would stay together. Scary that first and last wide open run but it felt ok. So I'll try moving the clip 1 spot richer on Sunday and see what happens.
Can I see the first signs of detonation by visual examination of piston tops? I pulled the pipes and had a nice look at the pistons last night and seen no signs of detonation like holes starting. I have in the past found a piston with much of the top edge eroded away on a 700cc polaris 2-stoke. This was acually caused by anti-freeze leak from a bad head gasket but we saved the crank. I've also seen holes blown thru pistons from dirty or ICED up carbs before. This is my first lesson in carb jetting to a set of pipes, I hope I don't mess things up, I am being careful. I have 35+ years experience in 2-strokes. As a rule though I tend to learn thing the hard way.
After I get things where I want could I retard the timing a degree just to be safe as I have no need for all out performance?
Have a good weekend in Ohio if I don't see you.
Don

You're heading in the right direction Don...the great thing about these old triples is, they will detonate to warn you about a lean/hot condition before they seize...I know this first hand from a few occasions while climbing the back straight at Mosport... If the needle raise doesn't help., I'd go one size larger pilot and try again.. always do a plug check after any adjustments...
Leave me some treasures at Ohio......

i would go with a richer pilot myself or adjust the mixture screw first if you have to turn it more then a half turn clockwise to get a change in idle rpm then it needs a larger pilot jet.

Thanks for the info. I will have to wait till the weekend as I spent the last one at Mid-Ohio. Too bad I missed you guys(Rick and Richard)I had to leave friday for a buck and doe back here saturday. My son picked up some real nice stock S3 mufflers, minus baffles, 100USD's WOW. I'll make baffles from a set of H1 baffles I have. The pipe is the right diameter but too long and the end "cone thing" fit perfect. Also picked up a couple of other items. I left a lot of treasures behind. Seen and heard a nice 69H1. Good show
