Just took my h1b out for a quick run when engine is idling its fine will rev up no problem so out on the road it started to pop very loud on pilot circuit then if i open it up it takes off and no popping then slow down it starts popping again im thinking fuel issue as if it was ignition timing would it pop all the way through the rev range Timing is set at 24 degrees I have foam filters but i stopped and took them of no difference any ideas please Simon

Timing is almost always the cause of popping or backfiring. Note: Changing point gap after setting timing will change timing... always set point gap BEFORE setting timing.

Did you use a dial gauge to set the timing?

I didn't use the Kaw suggested ignition timing. I set mine close to 3.2mm BTDC

Too lean on one or more pilot circuits? Maybe varnished up pilot jets?

Well had a look at the points gap and the right set didnt have a proper gap if i remember that set of points did come lose a few days ago have reset that set and checked the other 2 sets re checked ignition timing and had to adjust again have checked points again after the ignition timing all is good will take for a spin tomorrow and let you know how i get on On a nother note any one ever used a digital gauge rather than the dial gauge im hoping you get the same results Simon

Thanks im glad to i know these old triples need fetling im now turning my attention to the clutch as i can't get it in to neutral and when i put it in to gear it starts to creep forward springs and friction plates are within in spec so im guessing its cable or acuter needs fettling

Yes...
-loosen actuator lock nut -back off screw 1/2 turn -turn screw cw until slight pressure is felt -back off 1/8 turn -tighten lock nut
Be aware that actuator bodies have a plastic/nylon piece that can crack and cause problems. It is also possible that clutch plates are stuck together if they have been sitting for a long time.
