Is seems that this H1B is the devil. The clutch is not right. I have the hub in the blow up above. 6 steels, seven fibre plates and 7 swirlies. With the couple mm of play in the lever, it does not work at all. Now with it tight, it works partially. Given gas the bike will still move. 3 stock springs and 2 Barnetts. Never had a clutch problem with any of my builds. What am I doing wrong ?

Start with the pressure plate.... is it fit with alignment marks as they should be? Clutch release... is it 90 degrees or a little more at rest?

If I remember correctly, the early H1 clutch does not use the alignment marks. The release is at the correct angle as per the manual.

Thank you Dale. I stand corrected. I'll give it a try. I actually searched the resource site but did not see that page come up. My apologies.

Here is a procedure to follow for adjustment:

Thank you Dale Would the alignment make a big difference. I have it apart again and it was not correct. While I was at it , I measured the friction plate thickness and they are all above the 2.8 mm as stated in the service manual. 2.813 , 2.819 etc.
I don't want to assemble again to find that it still didn't work. Also, thanks for the adjustment steps.

It's a step by step process. Pressure plate alignment. Clutch release positioning. Proper release setting.
If any of the above is not correct it will create a problem. I suspect the release setting is the biggest issue you need to focus on. Tweek the screw in untill it hits and then back off 1/8 turn.
Use the parameters described in noted procedure.
The early clutch releases are prone to cracking. Be sure yours is ok and well lubricated.

Thanks Dale. I will report tomorrow when I do it. I am finding this unusual because , after probably 15 different clutches, this is the first problem I have had. I guess it has just been blind luck up to this point....

The H1B clutch should be a n easy pull Dave. also check the worm gear next to the engine sprocket. Some times the plastic cracks.

Also, thanks for the adjustment steps. One thing I'd check is if the steel plates are flat. A quick lap on a flat surface should let you know. Once I bought new steel plates, Vesrah I believe... I did the check and found they were conical and basically garbage, right out of the packaging.

This is a mystery. The steels are good and the fibres within spec. The pusher looks good. Hopefully the next re assembly turns out.
