I'm taking the Wanna B engine apart to check it. Each cylinder had 2 head gaskets. The black head below is off this and the silver one is an early one I have in stock. What is the cut in ring around it ? Is it a modified head or just a newer type? Just wondering why there were 2 head gaskets and if there was a clearance issue.

I finally found the answer by searching the resource site. It am not sure if the heads I have are early H1 and H1A or H1B but would it make any difference if I used the ones I have rather than the later heads with the recess?

They are all the same volume (or near enough not to matter).
The groove just insures a better seal on the gasket.
Maybe lap them on a piece of 400 grit and wd40 placed on a thick piece of glass before using?
You can lap the tops of the cylinders too if you like.

You might want to measure the cylinders with others some yahoo might have shave some off the barrels.Usually if they were having detonation problems they would through in another head gasket to get compression down. You can check the piston clearance by putting some solder in the spark plug hole and slowly roll it over by hand. Likely everything is fine but was just jetted to lean. Brad
