I am seeing black plugs showing a rich mixture. I am using the suggested jets and plugs. Maybe smaller pilots and hotter plug?

There could also be a problem with the air intake.... I would check the filter is the correct one and properly in place . Dave you mentioned you cleaned the carbs a number of times ... given that, I would check that all the passages still have the brass plugs in place. I had a carb that would run ok but not on the pilot circuit.... I found after a lot of work that the brass plug for the pilot jet passage had fallen out in the ultra sonic cleaner.. good luck.

Thanks Norm, Right now there is no air cleaner on because I have been playing with carbs. Incidentally, they all show 5 on my vacuum gauge at idle.

Sounds like an ignition coil to me. Have you tested them with a meter?

I replaced the coils with a unit from a running bike.

Those carb slides are attached to a rubber diaphragm, right? any chance one of them (diaphragm) is torn? Or the slide is detached?

Dave,,if a 74 it will take b6Es plugs..76/77 takes B8Es. Are all 3 plugs black??
Are the main jets correct for the 76/77 year? You should have R&L 110 middle 107 Pilot 45

Thanks Ian. Yes, jets are as you mentioned. 2 x 110 and centre 107.5 and 45 pilots.
All 3 plugs are black. I did see yesterday that 74's use B6ES. I am going for those this morning. Ian, maybe you know. Are the carbs for the 74 the same as those for later years with only different jets or, are they entirely different? I replaced the carbs with another set and I don't know what year they were from although I made sure of the jetting.

Those carb slides are attached to a rubber diaphragm, right? any chance one of them (diaphragm) is torn? Or the slide is detached? The slides and diaphragms are intact.

I might be wrong Dave but i think the diaphragm carbs were the same. The throttle slide on 74's were 120 and 75 onwards were 110
75 on had different ports to give more ZIP and that's why the jet change I believe.

Hey Dave, If you put the oil pump arm on backwards you will get full oil at idle and less oil the faster you go. That would make all the plugs rich at low speeds. If you have cleaned the carbs that many times and the timing is on I think you problem might be some where in the pump operation. Brad

I like the sound of that answer! It’s like when you flip the slides on a S3 because left and right hand carbs, the slides fit but the bike won’t idle because the wedge opening is on the wrong slide of the carb. I witnessed that one in person, the bike only idled on 1 cylinder but would come to life off idle.

I did check and it is on the correct way and working. Any other theories cuz this is driving me crazy... crazier , I guess really.

Ok Dave,I guess it’s back to the carbs.Make sure the slow speed jets are BS and not VM.They look the same but are not.The VM only meeker fuel The BS meter fuel and air. They are built different inside. They only have 3 holes in the side. The vms have 4. If you bought jets this might be the problem. Also all these jets are run through the float bowl. There are lots of tunnels to clean there. There is a starter jet that runs vertical and comes out in the side of the bowl That is very hard to clean.Dont forget to check the air jets on the air cleaner side. There are three make sure the 2 brass ones one on each side Are still there and clean.Dont forget to clean the cast in one of the top. These carbs are junk.If you have any more problems just put on 34vm mic’s. Brad
