hi everyone. i'm working on getting my mach III running again. correctly anyway. i have the stock air box but K&N replacement for paper filter and no fiber glass in the muffler. i rebuilt the carbs and used original jetting and synced. vacuum line is strong. i'm double checking the carb clip position is in the correct groove. at idle this bike smokes at iddle at start up, but after 10 minutes of start up that goes away. i did a ride about 10 years ago.i rode around the neighborhood and the bikes accelerates well and has good low end torque. so would no putting the fiberglass in the muffler and using a K&N vs a paper filter (don't know even if you could get a paper one) the cause of my problem? maybe a timing issue?? could use some help please.
i've torn this bike down to the frame, sandblasted myself, had frame powder coated. repainted kick stand, gauge pod/tubes, rebuilt forks and bead blasted the aluminum fork tubes plus engine covers painting clear coat over parts. did new points and condensors. rebuilt ignition coils cables and cap. added steel bar ends and very stick hand grips. routed all new cables and some electrical rewire repairs from corrosion. polished out header tubes, mufflers, fenders, tank and side covers. did the POR 15 repair on the tank. some cadium plating on original bolts to reuse. added a few K&N stickers to hide a couple rust spots. it's been quite the life journey working on this bike. i'd like to get to the part where i can start doing daily rides. i just need to get this last part of the puzzle figured out.

Be sure plug gap is correct: 0.016 - 0.020"

thank you for the links. i've been reading all day ;-)
any thoughts on the bike running rich from not packing the muffler with fiber glass?

Muffler packing or not won't cause it to run rich.

No worries about packing the mufflers - as far as I know, the factory never packed the baffles. As MRAXL stated, timing is critical as is carb set up. The air screw is an adjustment often overlooked in tuning..

As already mentioned. The no packing and filter would not cause the rich condition. It would tend to make it a little leaner if anything. As already suggested you might want to recheck your carb adjustments and even be sure you have the float level correct ? And too good advice already given on checking the timing.Be sure you have the right plug and gap. I experienced plug fouling on two bikes over the last several years. The cause on the first one was a bad coil. The second one the plug wire was bad.Plug wires are so often over looked on a resto ? 40+ year old wires can look perfect but not be good.

If you running the original needle & jet, they could be worn as I found out on a rebuilt H1B I did . A kit from Ivan solved the problem. As for timing do NOT set it to factory recommendations I set mine to 3.20mm or close to it. Sorry if I missed it but are the float height correct?
I have never fouled a plug on my B yet I usually get 6-8000 miles on plugs.
