Hey guys, It's been a while as I've been trying to get my H2 750 up and running. I've had the crank rebuilt and top end done by Jeff at NH Cycle. I'm about 400 miles into the break-in and my Center Cylinder started popping \ backfiring. I couldn't get it to fire so first thing I tried was changing the plug. That got it firing again, but if I rev it up at all I get a mess of popping and backfiring. I tried swapping the Left and Center carbs, same issue. So I tried swapping Left and Center CDI units, and still same issue. At a loss for what to do next. Here is a link to a video of the bike idling, and I'm pulling on the center throttle cable. youtu.be/jogtSKq7BfsAny thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Arthur

Hey Arthur, check your pick up on the stator - it could have a bad air gap, or be out of timing, or bad connection, or it might be loose. The centre pick up is at the top.

Also try switching coil and/or plug wires. Wires and plug ends are the simple fix to most problems.

I was about to say, check primary and secondary spark plug coil resistance and confirm they have a good ground to frame and battery.

Thanks guys, think I found the problem.
Tested the Rectifier, Checked Air Gap and Timing on Center Pickup, and Primary Coil Resistance all within normal ranges. I thought I wasn't measuring secondary coil resistance properly because I wasn't getting any reading at all, but when I tried checking it on the other two coils I got the 4200 ish ohms I was looking for. Looks like I need a replacement for the Center Coil. Also my battery won't charge past 12.2V on a trickle charger so I think its time to get a new battery as well. Any recommendations?
Thanks!!
Arthur

You can go with a good Yuasa battery - flooded or AGM

Do you really need a good battery on a H2? I’d go cheap myself 😜

You’re right - maybe if it was a wicked S3 500 a good one would be appropriate

Lol I meant the H2 / H1D iggy works fine with a dead battery.

Good to know that the ignition should still work with my battery. My horn didn't seem to work when my headlight was on though; was hoping a new batt would sort that.

I took the battery out of my H2 when I was in high school - curious as to why the headlight wouldn't come on unless the bike was running...couldn't see a fluid level in the sight window, so I turned it upside down and gave it a shake .. dust came forth..

Finally got a chance to swap in a spare coil I picked up from Zambia tonight. Cylinder fired up and I had to turn down the idle - good sign. Unfortunately as soon as I give it any sort of throttle the Center cylinder still misfires. I tried swapping CDI units one more time (swapping red and white wires for Center and Left) and the problem stays with the Center.
I think we've ruled out all the electronics now? Other than pulling of the top end to look for something out of the ordinary not sure what else I can do.
Also tried charging my old battery up a bit more, got it up to 12.5 Volts but it still won't give me a full power headlight with the bike running, and the Neutral light is dim as well. Revving the bike up brightens up the neutral light a bit but the headlight doesn't brighten up much. Could this be anything other than the battery?
Thanks guys.

The headlight thing could be a rectifier issue.. not sure why the centre cylinder continues to cut out - but I would have a real close look at the pick up on the stator..if the wires are loose, it will create a misfire.

I had that exact problem on my stator! It wasn’t until I checked the resistance for a 1/2 dozen times when I finally realized the blob of solder shift. The joint had failed! Very tough to see unless enough side pressure was enough to cause it to move the joint. The worst part was a year earlier I borrowed a stator from Zambia to test but the problem continued because I had bad coils (or weak ones). It was a bit of a pain because it was a gremlin that came and went and it took me awhile to track it down. So I really feel your pain!!! Check those solder joints even if resistance looks good!
