Hey guys lance here. Been years since i posted. Anyways my bike has some serious detonation when pinning it. Really bad for a second or 2 about 5-6 grand. I have never put larger pilot jets in it. Do you think this would help? I probably should with my chambers? I am no pro when it comes to carb tuning. Don't want the old girls blowing up again! I am pretty sure my mains are 115. Hope everyone is doing well. Thanks in advance Lance

I would double-check timing and look for an air leak (in that order). Cheers!

The better question is more to ask what throttle position are you in during deto

I believe full throttle from the description. Is this something new? Meaning it wasn’t happening before with the same pipes or you are just setting it up now? If just setting up now, increase the main jet. Best to be on the rich side to start. Raise the needle by lowering the clip if this is actually a part throttle deto.

Ya it is new problem. I havent ridin the bike much in last few years. I cleaned the carbs in my ultrasonic cleaner. I am going to try raising the needles and also check the timing. Thanks for the reply👍👍

Lance Is this at full throttle ?
If so - your mains are already large enough I would suspect an air Leak

I’d agree with that.

Well its only been a year since i started this post and and rplied! Hope everyone is well. Spent the day messing with the old girl yesterday. Cleaned carbs new 91 octane fuel and 4 ounces of Klotz octane booster. I put tge needles back to the center notch. I had then 2nd from top. Adjusted the pilots by rising engine speed to 2000 rpm on each cylinder and adjusting to highest rpm with the pilot. I am 2 turns out roughly on each carb. So if i was reading right i am rich? So i am oing down one size in pilot. From 30 to 25. Also still had my detonation problem after setting carbs. So i backed of tye timing which seems to have helped. But now i have a major bog when i hammer on it. So when i got it home i pulled the plugges. Its running extremely rich. Plugs are black. So i have ordered some smaller jets. I had some here but i can't find the damn things. I will keep ya posted on how things go. Good to see guys are still using tge site. Keep cool Lance

Hey Lance long time no see. I think your pilots are ok with two turns out.If you getting past 2 and a half or three it’s Tim to go down. I raced mine with 110 mains so I think your a little fat at 115.If you can’t get rid of the ping, put some unshaved heads back on or throw on a second head gasket.(knowing you they are probably shaved) Brad Didn’t realize this post was so old

I have owned and restored a few triples in my day and ran into quite a few people with runability issues of the old triples. These and other bikes from the 70’s suffer from owners not wanting to replace the rubber manifolds that are bound to leak after 40 years of use. Until you bite the bullet and replace these manifolds you will be scratching your head and removing the carbs and never solving the problem. After the manifolds are changed and it doesn’t run properly you are going to have to shell out some big coin and rebuild the crank……if you can find the seals and receivers.

If you restored quite a few triples you would know the only one with rubber intake boots is the H2. The rest don’t have them. Brad

I just assumed we are talking about a H2. The round rubber gasket in the top of the cab cap could also leak air if the notch isn’t lined up with the carb body. Some times they are missing. check it out.
