The red wires coming out of the harness at the coils are not marked. How can I test to make sure the coils are wired to the right ignition box? If I disconnect 2 red leads from the ignition box and then use an ohmeter can I tell which wire is the one still connected?

You can use the ohm meter and check resistance in each wire per box per coil ? Not really sure what you are asking ? Ohms should be very minimal - like 0.1 - 0.4 ohm

72 H2. I am not sure if the correct box is connected to the correct coil. The red wires coming out of the harness at the coils are not marked with the corresponding colours for each cylinder. I only got s few farts when trying to start it on the weekend. I want to see if the correct wires from the 3 boxes are actually connected to their correct coils. If I disconnect the wires at the coils and then disconnect 2 of the ignition boxes, can I use an ohmeter to see if the wire connected to the last of the 3 boxes is going to the correct coil. If I leave the right box connected and put the ohmeter on a wire at the coil end , will there be a different reading for the wire at the coil end for the wire connected to the box? This way I can be sure that the correct wire at the coil end is connected to the correct ig box.

I'll try to explain... First determine which white wire is coming from which pickup. Put an ohmmeter between the wire on the left cyl pickup and a white wire at the cdi box... the wire that has continuity is for the left cyl and the red wire that is from the same box is to go to the left coil. Meter that red wire to the left coil. Repeat for each cyl.

Alternate method, pretty much what Dale said, but with kicking the engine to also see if you're getting spark:
Determine R, C, and L for the three white pickup wires. If they're not labeled, take off the alternator cover and use a meter. Then with all three plugs out and lying grounded on the heads, unplug two white wires, kick the engine and see what plug is sparking. Repeat one more time with a different white wire and you're done.
This not only tests to see what CDI unit is connected to what coil, it checks all the way though the system.

Cool. Thank you Dale and Jim. All wires are color coded except for the reds from the harness to the coils. I don't know if the guy who sold the bike had them connected to the proper coils. This will certainly tell me quickly.
