I may finally have my 34's set up right. I had to synch them in the driveway and then went for a 5 mile blast around the country block. The plug colour looks good but there seems to me to be too much carbon build up on the plug despite the nice colour. The NGK plug reading web page mentions duration of the run. Can I write off the build up as not having taken it for a long enough ride? When it stops raining tomorrow, I will go for a longer blast to see. Any thoughts before that?

Plug reading is a real "black art" - my H2 has perfect looking plugs yet it 4 strokes heavily at 1/8th throttle positions. In your case it's possible there is an area of running rich and even though it isn't a big deal, it might be enough to leave some deposits. This is also an area where the oil debate kicks up again - synthetic and "ashless" oils should leave less deposits on the plugs...and I'm guessing you're a dinosaur guy, right?

Well, it has often been said that I AM a dinosaur Ian. But yes, Castrol all the way although the new stuff I just got says low ash.

New plugs/carb tune, run it as per you normally do 5-10 miles, then kill the engine, stop pull the plugs look at the color see were your at. Thats how I do it. Theres too many variables and they'll always burn differently at various throttle settings gear selection etc. I just find a happy medium and go with it. With normal use the plug colors will end up being an average of everything. As long as its not too lean across the board or you're noticing detonation. Better to be a bit rich, 'cause at wot throttle things tend to get lean-ish.

I wasnt implying doing it the " proper way" but with 30+yrs of dicking with these monsters, this is how I've always done it, and with little ill effect, I've always have had a decent running machine.
