Yes the clutch is a weak link on these triples.Especially when drag racing.Going to pay particular attention to the clutch when working on our purpose built drag bike. There is a lot of good advice on improving the durability of the clutch on the board.I have several bike projects that I am working on and have limited my time to those. Then I will build the drag bike. And spend more time riding and driving and going to the events.

A good DRAG SLICK is needed. Not ony will the bike launch and hook better it will be more consistent than a street tire of any kind. And too a slick requires less burn out time. You usually have to heat up a street tire more than a slick. You can over heat a tire too from too much burn out. Slick has a softer side wall and flexes to help with traction, Some street tires with stiff side wall will not flex and shock the tire surface and loose it's bite causing it to spin. Not only is the surface compound softer for traction the side wall flexes on a slick. Drag bike will have the following: HD clutch, air shifter, wheelie bar, slick,Killer stinger drag expansion chambers among other things.

Yes safety should always come FIRST !! I don't think I am young as you think I am ? I got my first bike in 1971.In the mid 70'S I was right in the thick of things. My H1 500 was a quick bike and had some mods IE: Chambers carbs port work and gearing. It was pretty quick. But paled by comparison to the bikes my friends had.IE: H2 750 with Denco 120 HP and a Z1 900 with a POPS YOSHIMURA 1050. Just to give you a prespective on the Z1 YOSHIMURA bike.It ran away from the DENCO H2 750.My "little" 500 was a pip squeak compared to that bike !! But my 500 usually handled many of the other bikes around back in the day.The performance of the Yoshimura bike was light years ahead of it's time !! My friend sent the engine to POPS in California. It took a whole year to get the engine back. But was well worth the wait.POPS RIP is a KAWA/SUZUKI Legendary factory race engine builder.

I had a Yamaha in the early days too. Right now I have an RD 350LC to go along with the triples.

Back in the mid 60'S the most popular bike was a SUZUKI X6 250.Everybody that drove two strokes around here got one. They were every where, seemed to be more popular than Kawasaki's and Yamaha's.Yamaha RD350LC / RZ 350'S are fantastic bkes. My brother has an RD350LC that run's 12'S at Napierville ,that he is restoring and almost finished right now.Talking about wobbling I saw my friend almost get killed on the Yoshimura Z1.We were on a stretch of road and I took off ahead of him and was wide open with my 500.Speedo said 125 MPH.I was topped out.He then came flying by me like I was standing still !! The bike was wobbling violently,I saw his butt coming off the seat and his feet off the foot pegs.I thought he was going to lose it !!!He managed to get it under control and pulled over and stopped the bike took off his helmet.I pulled over and he was shaking.Said when he was bouncing on the seat he couldn't let off the throttle !! When the engine came back from POPS YOSHIMURA there was a envelope and diagram with instructions to add pieces to the frame. It was never done. There was also a WARNING "FRAME FLEX "included. It said that even with the frame mods that the engine was a race engine intended for a race bike.IE: Suggesting another frame.

No leather jacket. No leathers at all ! It was in August. He was wearing a T SHIRT & SHORTS. At least he had a helmet on. Pretty scary. Yes it would be interesting to see a modern day two stoke with the latest technology applied to it.

No doubt Yamaha created some Iconic bikes. The RD'S and RZ'S were some of the best handling two stokes built.I remember seeing that with the 1976 RD 400'S my friends had.Although my 500 triple was faster. The RD 400 easily out handled the 500. The RZ/RD350LC is a great all around bike too,Is that a picture of your bike ?
