The Clymers i got with the yamaha SR500 single has a section for performance stuff. i got a performance exhaust for it. The Clymers manual I got with it mentions the exhaust and states that the freer flowing exhaust makes the bike run richer and to 1) go one or two sizes lower on the main jet and to lower the slide clip one position.
Lowering the main jet makes it leaner but ,with free exhaust don't I need a bigger main? Lowering the clip does make it richer so don't these 2 steps cancel each other out?
A little confusing, but with me, that's no big surprise.

I remember reading the same thing with my Clymer, I remember the stock carbs being finicky though, I put a Lectron on mine. But when I did have my stock carb on, I believe I only increases the main and the pilot slightly, never touched the needle...
