Took a drive today to New Hamburg
Dropped off a crankshaft for a full rebuild. Jeff was very friendly and talkative. He said he has recently done cranks for a fella all the way out in Tweed and even Nova Scotia! Wonder who they are! Lol.
Yes that's snow on the ground.
Ordered everything I need to finish the engine as well.
Time to roll up my sleeves and get some work done.

Had a nice visit from Papagriff and Raat2 the other day too.
Papagriff left with some H1 goodies to add to his collection.

Ok, picked up my rebuilt crankshaft today. Looks good! He said he would have it done for me by Christmas and he did. I picked up the new rods and seals from VintageKawasaki which they had in stock. Looked it over pretty close and I am happy with it.
I love the decal that came free with the seals!
I would like to thank Papagriff who recently hooked me up with a really good set of engine cases. Mine all have various issues and I was looking for a set. He even dropped them off for me! Anyway they cleaned up great with a little elbow grease and are ready.
So I will be assembling the bottom end this week in between Christmas festivities. Unfortunately the bodywork is taking me forever but I am picking away at it. Seasons Greetings everyone!

Did you do the bearings as well? Where did you source them? Very nice looking crank. Mine needs to get done as well and I am having a local guy in Ottawa do it. Bearings, rods, seals the whole 9 yards ..ouch!!!

Yep, bearings and all. New Hamburg Cycle used their sources for the Japanese bearings and the seals came from Sudco. It wasn't cheap, but what can you do? You have to use a crank you can believe in.

Ya my crank seems Ok except for the bearings feel like they have rocks in them. If they are toast I'm pretty sure the big end needle bearings are gone too

If they are toast I'm pretty sure the big end needle bearings are gone too It's a long way back to replace those brgs once the motor is assembled and installed. And even worse is the damage that will occure once those "shoulda replaced brgs" lets go

I'm following the tried and true philosophy " might as well" as it applies to engine rebuilding. If I have it all apart now is the time to do it right. New seals, new bearings, connecting rods etc..
It's an expensive way to do it but I would be kicking myself if I had to go back in and replace something. I don't know the history of the motor other than at some point an attempt was made to rebuild it.
Now if you found 2 out of 3 pistons were standard size but the third was 20 thou over would you have any confidence in what was done to this poor bike. See my other thread about the frame to get an idea on the life this bike has lived.
Sorry didn't mean to hijack 2smokes awesome build .... more pictures please. Great looking build

Having different size (oversize) pistons is fine and causes no grief as long as the pistons weigh close to the same weight. And you can also lighten a piston to bring it closer to the others. You can also mix brands and forged and cast pistons. Whatever it takes. Its pretty commonplace off the internet. Lol.
I will be updating this thread in a couple weeks. Been super busy at work with a large project and a terrible afternoon schedule that has killed my homelife and toy time.
