As some of you know, I have a '69 H1 project in the garage .. apparently I've been waiting for the perfect time to start the restoration. The bike came out of Winnipeg - kindly delivered by Ari to Tweed for me, quite a few years ago. It's complete, numbers matching and the engine is free. I have a painter lined up and I'm very excited about that. What I really need is a bunch of money - anybody want to buy an awesome 2003 Concours? I finally tore down the top end a couple of weeks ago - 2 cylinders same off easily...the 3rd was a battle. When I flipped it over..oil and water leaked out all over the place So number one cylinder has rust, and I expect I'm looking at a crank rebuild. One cylinder has some bent fins - looking for advice as to how best to straighten without breaking them - will a propane torch be hot enough? Busted off an exhaust header stud (because I was beating it mercilessly to get the cylinder off). Fortunately it came out with an easy out - my success ratio with these is low..so I was pleased. Noticed only 2 of the carbs were "windowed" - they look identical, have the same stamps..and I'm sure all 3 are original. But one of them has no window. So I got to thinking...and next thing you know, I have a drill in my hand...this is how the windows look Started with a little drill..like this Put a little saw blade into the hole .. and walla! Window. Having made a nice window...I set about filing out the silly vertical casting dangling in the middle of the intake ports...pictures to follow.

I remember when you got this in Tweed, we were all drooling over it

Looks like the disassembly of the engine went well. One cylinder stuck but crank not ceased ? Cylinder can be bored clean, and crank can be rebuilt.Could have been a lot worse ? Good start to a nice project.69 H1 an iconic bike !! Yes indeedy !! Keep up the good work.Going to be a nice bike !!

Great to see you are working on this one Ian! Just grind out those pieces of casting flash in the middle of the intakes right out of there... 😆

Nice bigger ports for high performance.... Also, I have some carbs to change to window ones. Somewhere around 20 or so. Just a little nest egg for retirement.....

It would be interesting to chuck it into some blocks and check runout right from old Mother Kaw !

It would be interesting to chuck it into some blocks and check runout right from old Mother Kaw ! Was thinking the same thing. I'm going to soak the seals in rubber rejuvenator and I was thinking of washing the whole thing in kerosene - any thoughts on that?

Was it stored in the original Kaw bag ? They came oiled.

Usually NOS is a positive but I can’t help but to be a bit Leary on 50 year old rubber seals. I guess there is only way is to find out for sure. Do you have any spare crank seals around so that you can at least do a fingernail durometer test first? Bearings are easy enough to feel when rotating. I guess the best case scenario is it did come in a sealed bag like what Curtis asked. Washing the crank in kerosene is the way to go.
