Figured while I did the other bike, might as well put up pics of what happened with this one!
I used to have a Denco ported H2 that was an utter pile of garbage, and got out of triples for quite a while. Got a nice 500 parts bin from ballvo and things snowballed from there! After getting into things, I realised I wanted something like my old H2 again, but maybe a little more suited for lower speed street riding. A friend of mine ended up having a nice S2 project he picked up, but was proving to be a bit much for him. We chatted a bit and I ended up picking it up from him and so here we go:
Bike was fairly clean, but a little tatty. Engine was leaking from everywhere, kick-starter was completely messed up, tank was all dented and overall the bike was rough around the corners. It wasn't where I wanted it to be, but it WAS the bike I wanted, because it looks quite a bit like a '72 H2, just with the wrong proportions....
So I ran at the thing full speed and did the critical maintenance bits first, paint and chambers
I also modified a few bits as I could (new headlight, new seat cover/foam, ears, rear-sets, deleted the signals, and put on better bars). Chambers are webbike, very nice fitment, quite loud and a decent design. Welds look like they're all gas welds, and the bracketry was well done.
I enjoyed the bike quite a bit, but it took a bit to used to riding it. Throttle has to be feathered between shifts to keep it on pipe properly, powerband was nice and narrow. Decided what it needed was a bit of sorting so onto stage 2:
Ended up redoing all the cables (I figured why not) and got a set of H1-B triples with later H1 forks. Hub is from a KZ650 and was set up for dual ZZR600 calipers. Swapped out the controls for ZZR600 ones with adjustable levers (one of my favourite mods on any bike) but elected to go to single disc (so swapped back to an EX500 master), as the single disc was already overkill on such a light bike. Also, drag bare always make my life miserable. I like them a lot more than clubmans, as clubmans generally make a bike questionably rideable, but they also tend to make cable and hose routing a nightmare. I was too cheap to use the OEM splitter (so did a double banjo at the master) but routing even one line proved to be challenging, let alone two. Redid the rims with Akront style rims (typical china specials) with new spokes and went with a set of newer tires just to keep things handling nice. Also replaced the swingarm with a late H1 swingarm (which is a touch wider and also longer than the S2 one) to keep the proportions looking nice and to to get the bike a little less wheelie prone. Swingarm was shaved by about 1/4" to fit in the frame, but fit fine otherwise, did new bushings while I was at it. Carbs were swapped out with S3 carbs, cylinders ported to denco specs and also only running 1 ring on the pistons. I'll probably revisit the top end, but it's working alright for now. Did a pressure test and it looks like the bike is pretty healthy!
Bike has been working well over the past 2 years (did this 2 years ago) but still proves to take some fettling to get going. If I were to do it again I'd have run a KH400 motor but now I'm committed with the pipes, so what can you do right? I figured I'd post this in case anyone wanted to do an S2 project (or start with a 250 and put the 350 top end on). I'd highly recommend it!!
