Has anyone ever filed down the fingers on the clutch basket? Mine has bad grooves from the friction discs. This may or may not be yamaha related.

Highly NOT recommended, it would have to be very precise, or one or more tabs on the plate could be taking all the load and break the plate. What can be done, is having "U" covers made to slide on the fingers to cover the grooves.

Bah! I've filed many off road baskets in my bikes and others. No issues what so ever. From kx60's to 500s. However I wouldn't file a basket smooth more then once.

That's using a wide handfile and being careful to keep everything straight.

I've done it before using a file and referencing the wear indents so everything seats as it should. Not hard to do if you take your time and check often.

It would seem if you measured off the unworn side of the fingers that you could make them all the same thickness again with little effort ..

and besides ...
I realized long ago that we don't have too many options available to us when it comes to these things. We can't just go out and order a new clutch basket ... sure, we could probably find one on Ebay (or whatever) but, it's going to have the same issues most likely.
The goal I set for myself is to keep these things alive by finding new ways to do repairs and attempt to make them (at least) as good a they were ... if not better.
Keeping an open mind (for me) is part of that goal ...

dirt bike clutch loading is totally different than a street bike. Filing clutch fingers is akin to hand sanding a cylinder bore to the next oversize. Some things you just don't do.

Dave, you probably have a rotary table at work, don't you? I tend to agree with both sides of this debate... You could probably get it to work with a file but why bother when you have the equipment to do it accurately. I had a guy in Peterborough tell me he could undercut my tranny by hand, as he's done it many times, I opted to pay the extra and get it done properly. everyone has their own comfort zone.

Wow. Undercut by hand......that takes THE Superman doing that correctly, and he's gone as far as I know.
And regarding the clutch issue: Really don't know. But I would think the load on the basket/fingers depends on the rpm of the basket? And I would also say a spinning dirt track tyre suddenly taking the ground again after a jump could bring a whole lot load to the drivetrain??
Regarding the rpm of the basket: A H2 basket rotates about 28% faster than a H1 at same rpm. Thats why it takes more torque before it slip. So, as said, maybe that is to take into consideration as well regarding load destroying the fingers??

I have done it in both street and dirt bikes. If the grooves are super deep I do not bother and find a new basket

No rotary table at work. Our shop is terrible. I'm still undecided

A banshee basket will fit (for an RD400). There are lots of aftermarket ones. But do I want to spend $200+?

It's funny, because Henry Wedge just posted a picture of one on facebook yesterday, for his Rz350 project
