It appears that my second gear is in bad shape.. It slips out under heavy acceleration. Sometimes when I downshift from third it goes into a false neutral as well. I am prepared to pull the motor at the end of the season to fix it, but I would like to alter the shift pattern to 1n2345. What do I need from a kh500 to do this? Everything? Is there any downside?

I'd imagine just the KH500 shift drum but I'm not sure?

The engine block (top half) is different to accommodate a detent mechanism.

I converted my kh500 to a 5 up tranny due to a bent shift drum, I had to toss the detent ball and spring into the parts bin and plug the case hole. Other than that it was a straight up swap. I like the 5up pattern better and wouldn't switch back. It's been 10 yrs since I looked at that old drum, does the detent mechanism slide off? Or could it be machined off? My old drum is in the attic, buried, so to hard to dig out

Nothing wrong with a 5 up shift pattern.

Nothing wrong with a 5 up shift pattern. I reckon it's just a preference thing Ian. I'm swapping the Bandit to 1 up 4 down... Which IS the correct way, it's just most don't know it! Lol

I find it annoying when every other bike in the garage has 1N2.... I was just curious.

1 down 4 up was made into the standard in 1976, as before 1976 riders had so many options they got confused and crashed. Also, as we know, transmissions can be semi delicate, so that why it's 4 up so guys aren't stomping on the shifters damaging transmission parts.

For anyone who cares, my clutch was slightly dragging (sytec replica/Barnett springs). I re adjusted it and my tranny problems are solved. I've been having fun with my dad on his CB750...
