UPS fees, here ya go: www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.htmlSo on a basic crank rebuild there will be an additional $45.60 or $51.20 ON TOP of whatever UPS decides to charge for their shipping! The brokerage for "free" will have a huge string attached, like a min charge to ship, which will likely cost the end recipient the same or more. Canada Post (the Canadian agent for USPS) charges $5.00, IF the item is flagged for tax collection by customs..... J

Compared to the courier's out there USPS and CP are a good cheap service... Even for local shipments.

I have not been following this to closely but it seems the shipping is going to kill us, this is an FYI, Remember I asking about crank rebuilds about couple of months ago and NH Cycle came up ( New Hamberg Cycle) I took the crank out there the crank didn't need conrods so that saved a couple of hundred bucks but the entire rebuild, with out conrods but with Tax was 518.00, he charges a flat rate of 250 labour and charges cost on parts, but when you consider Gas, I'm in Whitby so probably clost to 30 bucks in Gas if I drove 90km per Hr on the 401 and I did :-) no frigging way I'm wasting money on Gas if I dont have too so if you see some one doing 90 on the 401, don't flip the bird , wave its probably ME ;-). Anyway I was happy about that price, well my brother was, it was his KH250 Crank . To me Cranks are really expensive so if I am picking up a triple I need to get it as cheep as posible because chances are the crank will need work.

I sent my crank to N.H. Cycle a week ago and it cost me pretty close to $80.00 including the $20.00 for insurance. Insurance is $6.00/ $100.00 value. I est. that the crank is worth $600.00 if I had to replace it, that makes just to ship it close to $60.00 one way. This is from Lunenburg N.S. to New Hamburg Ont. As far as a brokerage fee from items from the U.S. as far as I can figure out it appears as who is working in the customs that day. I've ordered full fairings from AirTec in southern California and one was charged a brokerage fee but the next year I ordered one and it came with no brokerage fee and about 1/2 the time of the 1st one I ordered a year earlier. Go figure. Both were shipped by U.P.S.

BUMP Would a rebuilt crank for a vintage vehicle be exempt duty under the new regs?

I'm not aware of any tariffs, just brokerage fees and HST if a courier is used. If USPS or Canada post you can get away with not paying both of those if it doesn't get picked for random checking.

I used Charlie Smith (443) 752-1222 at triplecranks@aol.com to do my H1B. I've run it for a year now and have had no issues with the rebuild which is standing up just fine. Cost me about 600 Canadian skins all told with shipping.Pricy maybe to some, but that included lab seals and new radial bearings, con-rod, and zero run-out. The bad thing now is the exchange rate.

Thanks. Been in-touch with Charlie and I'll be getting the crank sent off this week, hopefully.

Can't remember the exact turnaround due to shipping there and back but he completed it within a week of it arriving.I'd say about a month max till I had it back in my hands.

We have ALL the tooling in our shop to rebuild cranks and for checking the run out etc...and have built quite a few cranks for Triples and Yamaha RD'S and RZ'S and have built some welded race cranks. Our shop is primarily a Muscle Car Restoration shop, and that is for the most part what we do.The two stroke and triples bike thing is our hobby. So we have been rebuilding all our own cranks, some for our friends, and some guys that are doing the vintage road racing club thing. We haven't offered the service yet.Because we are always busy restoring cars So we are not competing with any one for crank building.Just from perspective we can say that with these cranks getting older now and seeing a lot of miles.More often than not they require more than replacing bearings and seals.Obviously you can't see the crank pin wear or big end wear on the rod and the rod bearings.Until the crank is apart. And certain parts are not always easy to get. Most cranks go back together smoothly, but some can require a lot of time to get straight. What I am trying to point out is, where ever you send a crank out to get done, do not be surprised if when it is disassembled it may require more than meets the eye.And for the most part eveyone knows this. There are a few crank builders out there. This is not about who is best or where to send your crank.Just a few common knowledge facts about cranks you already know ?
