The last owner gave me this side cover, can someone confirm if it is for a 1972? He also told me he had gibled a carb trying to remove this screw and yes it's stuck.... seems the brass has spread flaring the threads, what is this and how do I get it out to clean the carbs? Also this brass piece is missing on the other 2 carbs, where do I get replacments? Mean while I wasn't going to start on this project for at least a month, now I have all the parts cleaned and am making my list.

Hi Don That side cover would be for a later Triple . The side cover you need is the same as 69-72 BUT the 72 had a spring clip inside to hold documents a 1 year only cover. I've seen these on E bay recently selling for CHEAP . Andre sells the plungers you need . At this point I might try drilling down the centre and use an easy out while applying heat and WD 40 . I would put the carb in a vice with soft jaws , apply heat ( hot air gun) to the housing and twist before the heat is transfered to the plunger . You may have to soak with WD , let cool and reheat several times .

Any one need this cover and have a 72 to trade?
I will try a good penetrating oil and heat before I resort to the easy out but I bet I have to resort to it before I am done.

Today I got the blues...... someone use a tapered metal object to try and get the cylinders off ( a chisel no doubt) Will have to see if a machine shop can weld these damaged areas up and mill it down or if I can find decent set of cases, some people should only be allowed to own rubber tools! Next challenge, both front fork tubes are bent.... suppose thats where throwing some more money at it comes into play, also the stem from the bottom triple is tweaked. this will also be going to the local machinist to discuss, straightening or finding a replacement stem to have him machine one up for me. How do you separate the stem from the bottom triple? 2 cylinders are toast from bad mechanics so I am spending a lot of time hunting and getting depressed.... I really wanted to do this bike over the winter but may have to put it away until I can collect more parts If that is the way I have to go I will drag this out of the dark corner and do something fun with it till I have more parts for the original build. at least I know I have 98% of the parts for the XL and it wasn't taken apart by a caveman. Look in your basement for old Kawasaki H1 and GSXR parts for me will ya lads.

The case/cyl damage can be sealed by coating with case sealer if you can't get replacements. Just keep it out of oil port and do a leak down test afterward.
I think Andre has new fork tubes.
The stem can be removed with a press.

Those bent parts are gixxer right? You could probably join a gsxr board to ask for those or ebay. PO must've been a stoppie and/or wheelie maniac like Zambia. Any H1 cylinders that you can find will work too. Doesn't need to be off a H1B. +1 on what Dale said, some well placed 3bond will seal that up just fine.
