Both left and right side covers are cracked. They're complete but definitely cracked. What's the recommended method of repair for these brittle pieces? It's almost like they're some kind of Bakelite. A friend said they can be welded with a plastic welder?

A lot of body shops can do plastic welding as there are a lot of plastic pieces on cars that get welded after a crash.

ABS plastic I believe, are they cracked at the pegs ? ABS would be lucky! Just use the solvent and maybe some bits of plumbing tube/fittings to bridge the crack on the inside of the panel

Its odd looking stuff, not Bakelite or phenolic.. maybe an impregnated abs of some sort. I remember repairing mine on my kh400, I believe they were originals... drilled a 1/16 hole at the end of the crack to stop further propagation then melted/welded the crack with a pencil soldering iron. Filled the back side with devcon and the front with bondo. but the pegs are a different fix.

Both have good posts but are cracked in the middle. Right panel cracks emanate from the oil window outward in two different directions. Thought about the soldering iron stitch repair but the guy doing the painting claims it won't last. Just wondered how others have fixed these. We'll see what plastic welding does.

I was ok with mine after the solder weld and Devcon seal. make sure to drill a tiny hole at the end of the crack. There is no stress on these covers other than when you pull them off and little vibration as they are rubber mounted. New repo's can be bought as you probably know Cheers ps.. not really a stitch but if you swirl the solder iron and bring the material from the sides and push it over the crack in a swirling motion it covers the crack completely.. Im so cheap I welded my trailer light lens as it was broken in about 10 pieces... I have more time than money lolo

Whatever I would choose to fix the cracks, I'd put a good layer of something like Bondo, or even better, a couple layers of fiberglass cloth and epoxy on the back side. There's plenty of room back there, and it would support a repaired layer that would be very prone to future cracks if left alone. One of the semi-flexible (not rock hard) epoxies might be a good choice.

I've ordered PlastiFix kit off Amazon at $36.00 after checking out the link supplied by Ballvo. Looks like just the thing. I am gonna layer in some kind of additional support like glass mat etc... The new repops aren't cheap.
Thanks to all for your help!

I put some fiberglass cloth on the back side & use abs glue over the cloth to secure it. then on the front soldering iron weld the crack. If you don't reinforce the back side with something,it will crack again.

lpmreplicaparts.com/index.htmlI have used these guys, better than OEM quality. Once the OEM plastic gets old it is prone to cracking and you may be chasing your tail. The tabs take the most flexing on remove and install. If they don't have what you want they do prototypes. Not sure of the cost on the proto.I used the covers and emblems on my four stroke tank (and I'm not talking oil tank either) . Emblems come all black and need to be painted.I must wash that honda thing! rt

- Anyone ever use epoxy puddy. I don't see it ofter but I have some and use it a lot for all sorts of things. For Trials we like to have short levers so they don't catch on trees and rocks and we only use 2 or 3 fingers (vintage) or 1 (modern with hydraulics). We cut them off, drill a hole in the ball end and form a new ball with the epoxy puddy. Don't know why you couldn't use it on your side covers.
- I have also used it to form an anti-rotaion fit for a car seal beam in a motorcycle headlight frame.
