I would have liked to build a bigger unit, but that kit alone was $200 (circuit board/transformers/tubes/ resistors ect..) Some of the larger tube kits with more features are well over $1000. I don't know enough about electronics to build one from just schematics. tubedepot.com/products/stereo-tube-amplifier-kitThere are a lot of cool guitar amp kits on that site too.

I have been playing around with it tonight and hooked it up to a different set of speakers (the 12trxb's from earlier in the thread) It sounds great through these. There is much more bass and it puts out more than enough volume for only being 8 watts. I am impressed.

You need some very efficient speakers paired on that amp. When I built my JBL set in the 70's I had a big problem finding midranges and tweeters that were as efficient as the JBL woofers. I ended up using horn tweeters. All the domes I tried were so much lower efficiency that I could hardly hear them.
Very cool project your on.

That "little" 8 watt amp would make these very efficient Klipsch Industrial Heresy speakers pound out the sound! These are in my garage along with Jim's old JBL's mated to my old Sony AV amp running through my Pioneer Elite network streamer / DAC. turn it up to 4 and it's way too loud! LOL! In the basement it's much the same, old stuff running with the Pioneer network streamer. Power is supplied by a 1967 Pioneer SM-83 tube amp with 40 watts per channel. With my mid 70's Dual 606 turntable and a set of Klipsch Tangent 400 speakers. Also a 90's Sony 5 disc CD player again played through the Pioneer N50 network player. I still like spin the vinyl once in a while but I love the network streamer for ease of use, internet radio, play anything on any computer in the house and ipod Air Play. Plus with the DAC and the tube amp it really warms up the Klipsch horns.

Now see, it brought back just the opposite memories for me Bud. A bunch of us used to hang out at a buddies place who had a very similar Akai reel to reel and we would catch a good buzz and listen to hours of bootleg Dead and Allman Bros concerts. Can you say... BAKED ? ? ?
Ahhh sweet memories, using what brain cells remain.
a very nice score Greg, especially for 60 bucks man ! ! !
